Upgrade your Wordpress to 2.5!

I find it quite ridiculous that after releasing Wordpress 2.3.3 a few weeks ago, there is now a newer Wordpress version. Now, I wouldn’t normally advocate an upgrade because so many things can go wrong. But then again, the effects of not upgrading could be pretty disastrous especially for those people who are monetizing their sites. Technorati has announced in their blog that they are removing “hacked” Wordpress blogs from their listing. Okay, back-up.. hacked? Well, older Wordpress versions have security threats and these threats are supposedly taken cared off by the new version. Hence, an upgrade would now really be reasonable.
So, to be of help to my fellow bloggers… here are the steps that I took to upgrade my blog.
1. Download the latest Wordpress version. Unzip the file in your desktop. You only need the wp-admin and wp-includes folder.
2. Back-up your entries by going through your control panel “Manage” -> “Export” then download the file that it would give you. This is just in case you mess up the installation.
3. Deactivate all plugins. Not all of them would be compatible to the new WP version.
4. Login to your FTP.
5. Delete the wp-admin and wp-includes folder via FTP.
6. Upload the *new* wp-admin and wp-includes directory from your desktop.
7. Go to http://yourblogurl.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php (of course, replace the “yourblogurl.com” with your blog’s URL.. for example, http://angelic-pink.net/wp-admin/upgrade.php
8. Click upgrade!
9. Check your site, the only thing that should look weird is the login area.
10. Activate your plugins again and enjoy your new WP!
This tutorial is dedicated to my dear Ate Gracie who will be celebrating her birthday next week!
