What are you doing for Earth on Earth Day?

My sweetie has organized an on-campus event to celebrate Earth Day. He would be inviting different agencies to promote programs that would contribute positively to our environment. This has always been a big deal for him. He was one of the reasons why there are now recycling bins present in our campus. Two years ago when he began his study, he noticed how there are no facilities for recycling and how wasteful the school has been. So, he got involved and really involved. He assumed a position in the student government and headed the committee responsible for the campus atmosphere. With that position, he was able to make some much needed changed to our campus. He contracted with a local recycling firm to help the school recycle properly.

Last year, his committee also sponsored several events to promote the awareness of how pollution is affecting everyone. I’d have to say that “Inconvenient Truth” has been one of the regularly shown films in our student center now. I am still looking forward to seeing the whole thing since I have only seen parts of it. Nonetheless, I want to show my support not because my sweetie is the one doing it but because it is really a good cause.

I take pride in driving a fuel efficient vehicle and have tried to influence and educated other people about the harm that their gas-guzzling SUVs and trucks can do. One of the highlights of the events in our school is an electric car show. This would give the students a chance to see alternative vehicles. Now that graduation is just around the corner, I’m pretty sure that some students would receive a car as a gift or would just want to change their car. This should be able to give them an idea and perhaps influence them to go greener.

Another thing that the event would be promoting is the use of public transportation. Unlike in the Philippines, the buses over here are quite green. They no longer depend on diesel. And the cost of riding is also pretty cheap compared to the soaring gas prices.

As always, there would be a band playing in the quad. This is one of the factors that draws in the crowd. Sadly, it’s really hard to make people care but with the right bait? Well, it might just work. Free snacks and refreshments will also be served.
