Update to Wordpress 2.6
Aug 7
2008
This new theme is the sole reason why I upgraded to Wordpress 2.6!
I was really hesitant because all my other upgrades have just been plain disastrous.
First of all, if you are not using the last version before the new version the upgrade instructions would not work properly.
My blog was on version 2.5 before I performed the upgrade.
Now, if you have followed through with Wordpress development you know that there is a 2.5.1 that came out before 2.6.
Anyway, let me point out the main flaw first.
If you follow the three step upgrade from the Wordpress.org site, it would tell you that you just need to copy the wp-admin and wp-includes folder into your old installation. However it would not be as simple since you would probably encounter missing file errors as Wordpress tries to execute itself.
Fix: Copy everything except the wp-content folder.
Wp-content folder contains your plugins and themes so you might want to leave this alone unless you are really doing a blog overhaul.
This folder might also contain some of the images or media that you have posted in your blog entries so be careful in deleting or overwriting it.
There is a bug with the Permalink structure for 2.6!
What this means is that if you used to have a “pretty permalink,” you might have to settle for the one that has “index.php” in front… pretty much what happened here in my blog.
Now, if you don’t know what a permalink is then you don’t have anything to worry about.
For those affected, Wordpress 2.6.1 should be the fix. Argh! Another update?!
Backup! Backup! Backup!
If you still do not know what that means, you might be in trouble if you mess up your blog like I did.
You can either do an export from your Wordpress control panel or use a backup plugin.
Do not forget to backup your SQL just in case something undesirable happens.
Anywho, I loved this new theme enough to suffer through another Wordpress upgrade.
